Choose the correct way to lose weight

Whatever your reason for wanting to lose weight there is a healthy and an unhealthy way to do it. To lose weight healthily, you should make sure you're eating a balanced diet which consists of lots of fruit and vegetables, as well as lots of foods that are high in fibre, lean meat and 3 servings of low fat dairy per day.

To successfully lose weight, you also need to reduce the number of calories you eat every day. As well as eating a healthy balanced diet, you should reduce the amount of fat you're eating. Choose low-fat versions of your favourite foods, use only a small amount of cooking oil, dressings, spreads and sauces and remove the excess fat and skin from your meat. Limit high fat foods, replacing them with lots of fruits and vegetables. You should also swap any bread, rice and pasta from white to wholegrain varieties. These will help to keep you fuller for longer, so effectively reduce your calorie intake.

When on a weight loss diet you should also think about the portion sizes of your snacks and meals, and measure and weigh food wherever possible so you visually learn what size portions you should really be eating. What you're drinking also plays a vital role in weight loss too. Alcohols, as well as sugary drinks, are high in empty calories, so drink water, tea, coffee or diet versions of fizzy drinks instead.
